The odd couple

Elisa and Leonardo. These two can talk (and fight) for days. Lately there has been a kind of back and forth with lots of real conversation between them and it's just beautiful to see. Over the last 3 years, I've had plenty of chances to witness Elisa playing with friends and often the relationships exist in that space and time and she doesn't talk much about them after the playdate. Of course, she loves seeing her friends whenever we meet up and will gladly talk about them when we look at photos, but again, she doesn't show strong preferences for who she wants to see or visit. At least there haven't been too many deep attachments that I can tell yet. But now with Leonardo, I think that's changing.

They play together at school a few days a week and we've been enjoying seeing him at the park a lot lately. There's something about these two--the way Elisa charges around giving orders and making up scenarios while Leonardo imitates and offers his own feedback on their imaginary world. It's charming and laughable and sometimes frustratingly so because they are so in sync. But hold on when they aren't. The world stops for a minute while they spit and spew hateful words and throw some mean punches both figurative and literal, unfortunately. Yes, they definitely know how to push each other's buttons sometimes, but then isn't that the result of a deep friendship that is always testing itself? Aren't we meanest to the ones we love? Oh, how I wish that weren't true, but it is. At least we're fortunate that they are beginning to realize that making up is also a lot of fun.
