Another year, another march

Another year, another women's march and this time around we didn't have to leave Sunnyside under the cover of darkness to meet in a spooky parking lot in Astoria for a 5 hour bus ride to DC. SO. MUCH. EASIER. And yes, some of the spirit that united us in that effort was lost, but really it was still fun to get a few of the local lady activists to come out for a power walk through the streets of Manhattan. Even this guy that photo bombed us looked happy. Of course, we aren't protesting nice things...Trump's assault on our Constitution and public institutions is no joke as much as I wanted to dismiss him initially. He's still president and he's still fucking things up on a daily basis. It's almost unbelievable how much damage he's done in one year, including this latest government shutdown which he's in jeopardy of having to own. Watching the Democrats fawn all over themselves trying to weakly stand up to it all is just as bad unfortunately. But what can I do? The midterms are still months away and most weeks I'm still not convinced we'll be victorious in them. So for now we stay focused. We keep taking to the streets. We keep sharing and spreading the truth in an era of so much misinformation and outright lies. And thanks to Samarra on graphics and Julie on posters, we had some pretty kickass signage to take with us.
Since Nacho ended up with a trip the day before, Amanda offered to have Max watch all four kids. And I was more than happy to take her up on it. The girls got a play date and we got to march and chant kid-free while navigating the chaos of a large gathering in the city. Getting off the train at Times Square was a bit hectic since we couldn't get on any of the uptown trains on the 1/2/3 line. The platform was a mess and trains were leaving without us so we jumped ship and took to 8th Ave to see if we could walk up.  Ellery suggested we hop on an uptown bus which worked for a few blocks until we had to abandon that too because of the march diversion. After a bit of confusion, we got to enter the route on 64th as it fed into Central Park West.  That one block took us about an hour to make it down, but we eventually got to turn onto the main route and into the glorious sunshine. The temps were almost 50F but in the shade it definitely still had a winter chill.  After that, we didn't waste much time making our way down the path towards Central Park South. Passing by Trump Tower at Columbus Circle prompted lots of boos and flipped fingers and I was happy to partake. The march this year felt less...well, everything. I wasn't as emotional or angry or fired up. I just wanted to be there. To be seen again and to be part of this huge crowd. So I went and I felt like it was important but maybe just for me. Afterwards, most of our group was up for grabbing lunch back in the hood so I texted Anne at the Lowery and we made our way over to be greeted with her warm hospitality. Love that place and love that it has been such a great spot for some of our best meet ups. After such a big day, I really just wanted to chill out at home and that's what I did. The girls were back from their playdate at the Lefers and so we made an evening in more fun with a little relax time on my bed. I love these girls. Even when they annoy each other and me. I hope that some of the things I care about will become their passions. And I pray they have better leadership as they grow. We need to do better for them.

Opening Up

For Christmas this year, we decided to treat the girls to an experience rather than just a lot of stuff. Not that they didn't get lots of stuff too, but you know...we thought it might be fun to take them to Broadway for a show. It would be Carolina's first outing to the Great White Way and Elisa's second after her debut at "Annie" when she was 4. The idea really took shape after I found out Sara Bareilles was coming back as the lead in "Waitress" which Nacho and I saw the year before with Jesse Mueller. Elisa loves the music from the show and I thought it would be a real treat for her to see it performed, even if the themes are a bit mature. Nacho teamed up to take Carolina to "SpongeBob Squarepants" which was definitely up his alley and that was that. The girls were picked up from school early on a Wednesday and we were off in the light snow to enjoy a wintery day in Times Square!
The rest of the week was about shows of another kind--school concerts! The kids did a great job and I will say I'm getting better about relaxing around the asshole parents with their cell phone videos. It took me awhile but I realized I don't need video of every performance. Besides it was too hard to even see where Elisa was in the massive amount of kids on the floor up front. Carolina got in on the action too offering up a joke at the intermission. "Why did the sheep get a ticket? Because he's a baaaaaad driver." I love that kid and her wacky sense of humor.
My winter cleaning took shape this week with a total revamp of the living room starting with a mop job and new carpet from Target. The beautiful new colors really brought the room to life and now my goal is to convince Nacho we need that new couch. Our current one has been with us since 2005 and it's got more bodily fluids soaked in than I care to admit (talking babies here, folks). But even with just the new carpet, I'm a bit happier. So much is in flux with our life right now that I think it's good to sometimes just appreciate where we are. The rug is helping me do that. So it's worth every penny.

Ski Weekend

Well, we did it. We managed to plan and execute a skiing weekend with the girls. It was our first time back on the slopes in nearly 17 years and I have to say there was more than a little trepidation going into it. Nacho has been eager to return to the sport since his ACL-tearing days on the soccer field ended. But I've been more reluctant, especially given how little I enjoyed skiing in the first place. When Nacho and I first ventured out to Colorado to ski back in our early dating life, I tried--I really did. I wanted to impress him or at least not kill myself and I was mostly successful. There were even a few moments of skiing in fresh powder on Copper Mountain where I found myself charmed. So this was what everyone talked about. But with no health insurance at that time and hardly a sporty gal, I was happy to let that hobby go. Over the years we talked about going again and just never did. Then he destroyed his ACL and I assumed his skiing days were over. But Nacho is not one to give up trying. And so after all this time his desire to ski again was still burning away. When we realized he had the entire MLK weekend off this year, I thought it might be fun to plan a little getaway to introduce the girls to skiing. Initially I crowd sourced ideas for a trip to Vermont, but as the opinions poured in, I revised that idea to include slopes much closer to home. Belleayre Mountain in the Catskills was a strong contender for best local place to try out the sport and we had just been there in the fall and knew the lay of the land. We booked a few nights back at the Starlite Motel in Big Indian, NY and that was that. We were going to ski again and the girls would take lessons for two days. It was time. I almost felt ready.
