Garden Party

One thing I always enjoy about our visits to mom and dad's house is that the girls have a lot of unfettered access to the backyard and all the freedom of running around outside that the heat and humidity will allow them. In the spring and fall, it's actually quite pleasant to just sit out on the back deck with a cup of coffee or a drink and enjoy the little flutters of passing birds and scampering lizards and frogs.  In the thick of summer, the inflatable pool more than makes up for the heat even if we manage to kill a little bit of dad's precious yard with that oversized bathtub. But what I forget about having kids that are being raised in the city, is that sometimes all they want is to dig in the damn dirt. It's not every day that they get to see a real, live garden and use some gloves and tools to scratch around in it. Mom had them all excited about planting seeds which was the perfect excuse to follow them outside and watch what happened when they both wanted the same spade. Oh yes, good times. Hopefully we'll be back this summer to see these watermelon seeds come to fruition, literally, since all Carolina wanted to know was if they were really going to grow. And dad's trick to convince her that the store-bought melon coming out of the fridge was really from their garden largely failed. She may be three, but she's no dummy.  But if grandma knows anything about planting--and I believe she does--they will hopefully produce a few choice melons that we can sample. So I guess the onus is on us to get back down there and soon. And next time I'll be sure to pack our bathing suits.
