Week in Review

After my quick trip to Atlanta for the Delta banquet, I returned to a week full of activities and warmer temperatures. Wednesday I bludgeoned Elisa into her second dental appointment to get sealants put on her molars and then Thursday we had her Spring Concert and Book Fair at AOC. Sitting in the sweaty gym with Carolina climbing all over me, I tried to remember that it was part of single parenting to lower expectations and try to enjoy whatever comes you way. I couldn't sit there and get photos of each and every kid like I have in the past, and that's okay. I got a little video of Elisa's group (which was way too big with all the 1st graders onstage at once) and a few shots of her and that was good enough. We hit the very crowded and exit-blocking book fair in the hallway on the way out and that was that. I even saw her family portrait (plus mystery pet) on the wall as I waited in the check out line. Love the matching outfits. Elisa is pretty styling.
Then by the end of the week, the sprinklers were on and Carolina spent the whole afternoon running wild at SGP with friends. Because I was going to be taking Elisa and Birdie into Manhattan that afternoon for a marketing study on video game role models for girls, I know Carolina would be inside for her playdate with Jasper. So we played as long as we could in the sunshine and then off I went with the big girls at 5pm. They actually did great together and we made it to the study where they talked for 30 minutes and made $50 each (in gift cards) as well as out to dinner at Bon Chon Chicken and fro yo at Pinkberry.  The restaurant was like a club after 6pm and the girls acted very grown up with their newly acquired leather journals and colored pencil sets. I was really in awe of how well they did on this first ever city playdate. Taking them back on the train around 8pm was even a breeze. And by the time we picked Carolina up and found Nacho returning home in the process, she had face paint and a fireman's costume on and looked like she enjoyed her evening as much or more than we did--a real Friday night success!
After the Memorial Day Fair on Saturday, we woke up Sunday morning without any plans. So we took off to LIC to walk a little and check out the LIC Flea with its food vendors and wares for sale. We grabbed a nice little sampling of the local cuisine including the Korean bimbibap, empanadas, Japanese veggie pancake, the smallest most expensive lobster roll you've ever seen and a couple of cold beers. The old fashioned doughnuts for dessert were pretty good too. By the time we were ready to find some shade and go for a walk, it looked like rain was imminent so we sat for just a few minuets on the side of the pier and then started walking back to the car. Rain drops began to fall pretty soon thereafter, so we wrapped things up with a visit to Toys R Us in Rego Park to spend Elisa's gift card earnings. She's definitely my daughter when it comes to spending it as fast as she makes it. But hey, it was a nice finish to an otherwise busy week. More of that to come as the month flies by!
