California Dreamin'

Traveling with a kid is always worth it. Even though yesterday wasn't entirely full of rainbows and giggles, it went fairly well. And most importantly, we made it! Apart from the meltdown in the toy store at JFK and the 2 minute screamfest after we landed at LAX, it was pretty much the usual mixed bag of two year old fun and games. But this time we had Papa's hands on deck too which made it actually feel like a vacation. I kept my composure even when the Elisa didn't and that makes all the difference when you have a 6 hour flight and 3 hour drive to get through. First stop in LA? Why In-N-Out Burger, of course. Ever since The Big Lebowski made me laugh at loud at its bowling caper hijinks, I've been wanting to try this fast food mecca of the West Coast. It was definitely packed with other curious tourists, but watching the planes blast over our heads while we munched on the patio was a nice introduction to the California sun. And next time I'll know (as Nacho did) to get the Double. One patty was just not enough.
After a somewhat restless night adjusting to the new surroundings, we woke up to the desert in full bloom. What a change. I mean, I started the day with breakfast on the patio followed by a hike up the nearby 49 Palms Canyon trail to see these beautiful sights. It's just so strikingly different to our life in the chilly East Coast...Oh, and did I mention it was in the 90s today??
Tomorrow morning we are going to hit the farmer's market in Joshua Tree and later drive through the National Park there. Can't wait to explore more of those gorgeous rocky landscapes and see how much Elisa loves all the lizards. She wanted to chase them today, but fortunately the lizards are faster than her! Knowing there are snakes and bobcats out this way too doesn't make this city girl thrilled to hike off trail, but hopefully we'll keep everybody safe and happy on the trails and get home in one piece. It's all about loving the adventure and spending time with family. And no matter what, that makes all the travel craziness and jet lag worth it.

Oh, it was bigger! HUGE in fact. And for a minute, I thought Elisa might drink it all. Having fun and more pics to post soon!
