Beachin' it

When we started talking about Beach Week 2016 a few months back, it looked like September was going to be difficult to make. With school just starting and no holidays in sight, the calendar was unrelenting. But a peek at October showed that we would be rewarded with several partial weeks as the month got underway. So mom got her search underway with help from Mia and myself, and she had sealed the deal on a beautiful oceanfront rental weeks in advance. Beach Week '16 was happening a little later this year, but I was more than ready. Nacho had a trip that ended the Sunday we planned to fly down, so we ended up meeting him at the airport after his trip. It was a reunion in the last row and that was just fine by me. We were off to Raleigh by 6 p.m., and then a three-hour car ride at night to get all the way to Emerald Isle by midnight. It was a long evening of traveling, but these girls were excited and truth be told, I was too. It definitely felt like a real vacation with a whole week of beach in front of us...
We flew down the the first day of the rental on Sunday, the same day that Barb and Karen and Kent and Darla all arrived. And waking up the next morning, the sun was shining and the house had that beachy glow that I love. Coffee and Krispy Kremes on the porch and the girls were already digging into their candy supply from Grandma (thanks for the candy cigs which definitely looked realistic after their haggard night). Leroy made it on on Monday by about noon and that was just the burst of energy the fishermen needed to amp up their game.  With the looming tropical storm Matthew brewing in the Caribbean, I was happy to enjoy our first few days in Emerald Isle. The forecasts weren't great for the end of the week and there was a strong likelihood we might get evacuated if the hurricane kept heading north along the coast after hitting Florida. But for now, we were just getting our week underway and it was starting off to be a beautiful one. For now.
