Competing for Cake

With our playgroup birthdays in full swing this summer, it only made sense to combine a few of them.  So the July boys Riley and Bix had their birthday celebration together at the park with a sports-themed extravaganza. The teams competing in the soccer tournament each had homemade tie dye t-shirts thanks to Bix's crafty parents, Monica and Humphrey. They really did a bang up job keeping the colors and designs so uniform, and I was tickled when Carolina asked if there was a goodie bag. "Nope. Just the t-shirts." Well, that was better than a bag of plastic crap in my opinion. And I was glad to see both of my girls out there on the field having a go at the games. Elisa and Carolina took turns playing keeper and Nacho got in the mix to help Carolina block a few shots and even score a goal. It was a monstrously hot day though, so all the kids needed a bit of a break to rehydrate and regroup. Bix was fearless throughout leading his team to victory, and Riley wore his brand new cast with great panache. Poor kid had apparently fallen off the wagon at the track the night before leading Dawn to take him to the ER that morning. Yikes. But the birthday show had to go on, and it did. Lots of sweaty happy kids chasing each other and a ball around the field was a great way to earn a medal, another perfect keepsake of this sporty party. By the time the cakes (yes, two--one regular and another ice cream) rolled around, I'd say everyone was a winner. We noshed and enjoyed a few beers as the sun set and the kids closed the park down once again. Summer birthdays are great for so many reasons, but sharing them with our playgroup pals has to be the best.
