Marvelous Murcia

When we originally looked at staying in Murcia for our first ever family beach trip in Spain, we knew it was going to be a good choice. Our friends Irene and José hail from there and they gave us lots of good advice. Nacho and I had been to neighboring Almeria for two of our previous beach journeys and we loved the little coves and hidden beaches near the coast at Agua Amarga and San Jose. But this time, we thought branching out a bit and finding out what Murcia had to offer was a safe bet. And boy, were we right. The beaches all over were just beautiful--from the three small calas at Calnegre to the wide open expanses of Calblanque to the perfect little beach town of Cabo de Palos. And the food...it was all quite good though my favorite was the soupy, rich broth of the caldero at El Faro de Puntas in Calnegre. Oh man, that was divine. The next day we made it to try to the same dish at El Mosqui and I have to admit I wasn't sure anything could top it. It was very good, but my heart was still in Calnegre. The town on the other hand was much bigger and prettier. I think Nacho and I both would like to stay closer to there the next time. Seeing all the development of La Manga was a bit of a turn off, but the proximity to the beaches at Calblanque would be reason enough to return. Our last evening hike down to Cala Magre where we were rewarded with a beach all to ourselves was absolutely stunning. The golden light warmed everything up and we enjoyed a last dip before packing up to head back to Madrid the next morning. Yes, Murcia was just what we hoped it would be. Now next time we need to meet up with our friends and really enjoy all it has to offer.
